CAT Questions

Q:

1.12.91 is the first Tuesday. Which is the fourth Thursday of December 91  ?

A) 22.12.91 B) 25.12.91
C) 24.12.91 D) 23.12.91

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) 25.12.91

Explanation:

Given that 2.12.91 is the first Tuesday
Hence we can assume that 4.12.91 is the first Thursday

If we add 7 days to 4.12.91, we will get second Thursday
If we add 14 days to 4.12.91, we will get third Thursday
If we add 21 days to 4.12.91, we will get fourth Thursday

=> fourth Thursday = (4.12.91 + 21 days) = 25.12.91.

Q:

A man is riding a bike with front and back wheel circumference of 40 inches and 70 inches respectively. If the man rides the bike on a straight road without slippage, how many inches will the man have travelled when the front wheel has made 15 revolutions more than the back wheel?

A) 1100 B) 1300
C) 1400 D) 1200

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 1400

Explanation:

Given the ratio of the circumference of front wheel  is 40 inches and back wheel is 70 inches.

Distance covered = Circumference of the wheel × No. of Revolutions made by the wheel

If n is the number of revolutions made by back wheel, the number of revolutions made by front wheel is n+15

Distance covered by both the wheels is the same

i.e, 40*(n+15)=70n

 n=20

                Front wheel      :      Back Wheel

 Circumference       40      :      70

 Revolutions           35      :      20

Distance covered  :  40×35 = 70×20 = 1400 inches.

Q:

Which solution has the highest pH?

A) 50.0 mL 0.0500 M calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 (aq) B) 50.0 mL 0.0500 M sodium hydroxide, NaOH (aq)
C) 50.0 mL 0.0500 M nitric acid, HNO3 (aq) D) 50.0 mL 0.0500 M nitrous acid, HNO2 (aq)

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 50.0 mL 0.0500 M calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 (aq)

Explanation:

50.0 mL 0.0500 M calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 (aq) has the highest pH value.

Sodium hydroxide and Calcium hydroxide are strong bases so they completely ionize in solution. Because they ionize at the same rate, and Calcium hydroxide has the higher pH calculated, then Calcium hydroxide, in fact, has the highest pH.

Nitric acid is a strong acid, so it completely ionizes in water. Whilst nitrous acid is a weak acid. Therefore, the nitric acid solution has the LOWEST ph.
