Questions

Q:

Which of the Following is an Amorphous solid?

A) Quartz Glass(Sio2) B) Chrome Alum
C) Silicon Carbide(SiC) D) Graphite

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) Quartz Glass(Sio2)

Explanation:

An amorphous or non-crystalline solid is a solid that lacks the long-range order that is characteristic of a crystal. In Brief, An amorphous solid is any noncrystalline solid in which the atoms and molecules are not organized in a definite lattice pattern. Such solids include glass, plastic, and gel.

Quartz glass (SiO2) is an amorphous solid due to its short range order of constituent particles. Note Quartz is a crystalline solid while quartz glass is an amorphous solid.

Q:

Explain Belady's Anomaly?

Answer

Also called FIFO anomaly. Usually, on increasing the number of frames allocated to a process virtual memory, the process execution is faster, because fewer page faults occur. Sometimes, the reverse happens, i.e., the execution time increases even when more frames are allocated to the process. This is Belady's Anomaly. This is true for certain page reference patterns.

Q:

Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer to each question out of the four alternatives.

In mid-2012 I completed my first massive online open course, or MOOC, the kind widely offered by Coursera, EdX, Udacity and so on in partnership with different educational institutions. It was on clinical trials and ethical practices, offered by Johns Hopkins, on Coursera. This was shortly before the MOOC sensation hit India, and when Coursera, which was founded by two Stanford professors, itself was just a few months old. The MOOC bug had bit me. The course I’d completed was mainly designed for health care professionals who would be involved in actual clinical trials, not college students who had no prior knowledge of that area. I decided to enroll in the course because it was the only biology related course open at the time. However, I did see hope in that sometime in the future I’d be able to get a glimpse of what classes are like in the hallowed halls of major educational institutions around the world. By early 2013, Coursera and EdX had partnered with so many educational institutions and expanded their course offerings to include everything from food and nutrition to Greek mythology to business, that I was spoilt for choice. I spent hours going through course catalogues and poring over course descriptions, almost delirious with excitement at the fact that I was actually going to be able to take classes offered by universities I had only dreamt of attending.

Q:

Consider the following statements :

1. There is no net moment on a body which is in equilibrium.

2. The momentum of a body is always conserved.

3. The kinetic energy of an object is always conserved.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

A) 1, 2 and 3 B) 2 and 3 only
C) 1 and 2 only D) 1 only

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 1 and 2 only

Explanation:

There are two conditions that must be met for an object to be in equilibrium. The first condition is that the net force on the object must be zero for the object to be in equilibrium. If net force is zero, then net force along any direction is zero.

Kinetic energy (KE) is the energy of motion, and kinetic energy is not always conserved in a collision

Energy and momentum are always conserved.

Q:

A solid ball of metal has a spherical cavity inside it. When the ball is heated the volume of the cavity will

A) increase B) decrease
C) remain unaffected D) have its shape changed

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) increase

Explanation:

The metal ball can be considered  to be made up of several layers of thinner ones. On heating each of these layers will increase in radius. As the inner most layer also increases its radius, the volume inside it i.e, the volume of the hollow portion will also increase.
