Quantitative Aptitude - Arithmetic Ability Questions

Q:

A man invests Rs.5000 for 3 years at 5% p.a. compound interest reckoned yearly. Income tax at the rate of 20% on the interest earned is deducted at the end of each year. Find the amount at the end of the third year

A) Rs.5624.32 B) Rs.5423
C) Rs.5634 D) Rs.5976

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) Rs.5624.32

Explanation:

5% is the rate of interest. 20% of the interest amount is paid as tax.

i.e  80% of the interest amount stays back.

 if we compute the rate of interest as 80% of 5% = 4% p.a., we will get the same value.

The interest accrued for 3 years in compound interest = 3 x simple interest on principal + 3 x interest on simple interest + 1 x interest on interest on interest.

= 3 x (200) + 3 x (8) + 1 x 0.32 =600 + 24 + 0.32 = 624.32

The amount at the end of 3 years = 5000 + 624.32 = 5624.32

Q:

If you deposit $4000 into an account paying 6% annual interest compounded quarterly, how much money will be in the account after 5 years ?

A) 3387.42 B) 4387.42
C) 5387.42 D) 6387.42

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 5387.42

Explanation:

The mathematical formula for calculating compound interest depends on several factors. These factors include the amount of money deposited called the principal, the annual interest rate (in decimal form), the number of times the money is compounded per year, and the number of years the money is left in the bank.

 FV=p1+rnnt

FV = Future value of the Deposit

p = Principal or Amount of Money deposited

r = Annual Interest Rate (in decimal form )

n = No of times compounded per year

t = time in years

FV=40001+0.0644(5)= 5387.42

Q:

A group of workers was put on a job. From the second day onwards, one worker was withdrawn each day. The job was finished when the last worker was withdrawn. Had no worker been withdrawn at any stage, the group would have finished the job in 55% of the time. How many workers were there in the group?

A) 50 B) 40
C) 45 D) 10

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) 10

Explanation:

Let the number of workers be x.

Now, Using work equivalence method,

X + (X-1) + (X-2)+ . . . . + 1 = X *55% of X

=> [X * (X+1)] / 2 = X * (55X/100)    [because, Series is in AP. Sum of AP = {No. of terms (first term+ last term)/2} ]

Therefore, X = 10

Q:

A fort had provision of food for 150 men for 45 days. After 10 days, 25 men left the fort. The number of days for which the remaining food will last, is:

A) 29/5 B) 37/4
C) 42 D) 54

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 42

Explanation:

After 10 days : 150 men had food for 35 days.

Suppose 125 men had food for x days.

Now, Less men, More days (Indirect Proportion)

 125 : 150 :: 35 : x    =>    125 x x = 150 x 35

 =>

=> x = 42.

Q:

The sum of the number of boys and girls in a school is 150. if the number of boys is x, then the number of girls becomes x% of the total number of students. The number of boys is :

A) 60 B) 70
C) 80 D) 90

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 60

Explanation:

We have : x + (x% of 150 )= 150

=> x+(x/100)*150] = 150

=> 52x = 150

=> x = (150*2)/5 = 60

Q:

Rs.1200 divided among P, Q and R. P gets half of the total amount received by Q and R. Q gets one-third of the total amount received by P and R. Find the amount received by R ?

A) Rs. 1100 B) Rs. 500
C) Rs. 1200 D) Rs. 700

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) Rs. 500

Explanation:

Let the amounts to be received by P, Q and R be p, q and r.
p + q + r = 1200
p = 1/2 (q + r) => 2p = q + r

Adding 'p' both sides, 3p = p + q + r = 1200
=> p = Rs.400

q = 1/3 (p + r) => 3q = p + r

Adding 'q' both sides, 4q = p + q + r = 1200
=> q = Rs.300

r = 1200 - (p + q) => r = Rs.500.
